Not always, some transfusions are planned in advance for scheduled surgery or known chronic anaemia, while others are performed urgently in response to acute blood loss or a critical drop in red cell count.

Every unit is blood typed and cross-matched against your pet’s blood before transfusion this checks for compatibility and significantly reduces the risk of a transfusion reaction.

We maintain an in-house blood bank with screened, typed donor units in storage, which allows faster response in emergencies compared to sourcing blood only after a critical case arrives.

Whole blood contains red cells, plasma, and clotting factors together, and is used for acute blood loss. Packed red blood cells are concentrated red cells alone, often preferred for chronic anaemia where volume overload is a concern.
