Blood Transfusion & Blood Bank

Fresh Frozen Plasma

Can be lifesaving for clotting issues.

Clotting problems can turn dangerous fast

Fresh frozen plasma restores clotting factor support directly, alongside treating the underlying cause. For cases where red cell support is also needed, see Whole Blood Transfusion.

When Fresh Frozen Plasma May Be Indicated

DIC Support

Plasma support for patients with disseminated intravascular coagulation, used to replace the clotting factors consumed by the condition. Managed alongside critical care for these patients.

Rodenticide Toxicity Support

Clotting factor replacement for pets exposed to rat poison or similar anticoagulant agents. If you suspect exposure, call +60-3-5145 8989 immediately - do not attempt home treatment. See also Whole Blood Transfusion where combined red cell and clotting support is needed.

Hepatic Coagulopathy Support

For clotting deficiencies linked to liver dysfunction, where the liver's ability to produce clotting factors is impaired. Used alongside management of the underlying hepatic condition.

What Happens When You Come In

Suspected toxin exposure? Call +60-3-5145 8989 now - do not attempt home treatment while waiting.
1

Call Ahead

Calling before you travel gives the team time to prepare and thaw the plasma unit in advance, reducing delay when you arrive with an urgent case.

2

Assessment

Clotting status, clinical picture, and relevant history are evaluated on arrival to confirm that fresh frozen plasma is indicated and to guide dosing.

3

Plasma Support Given

Plasma administered under continuous monitoring. Vitals are watched throughout, and the team responds immediately to any sign of reaction.

4

Ongoing Monitoring

Clotting response is tracked after administration. Further transfusion or adjusted management may be needed depending on the underlying condition and how it responds.

Fresh frozen plasma contains clotting factors and plasma proteins, and is used to support patients where these are deficient or have been consumed – for example in DIC, hepatic coagulopathy, or after rodenticide exposure. It may be used alone or alongside other blood products depending on what the individual patient needs.

Fresh frozen plasma transfusion is available during ExoCare clinic hours: Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 7 PM. We are closed on Tuesdays. If your pet has a clotting emergency outside these hours, contact a 24-hour emergency veterinary facility immediately – do not wait until we reopen.

Call ExoCare immediately on +60-3-5145 8989 – do not attempt to induce vomiting or give any home treatment without direct veterinary advice. If you are outside clinic hours (Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 7 PM), contact a 24-hour emergency veterinary facility straight away; anticoagulant rodenticide exposure is time-sensitive.

That varies by the underlying condition and its severity – plasma support can help stabilise clotting status, but the speed and extent of response depends on the individual case and whether the underlying cause is being addressed at the same time. Response is monitored throughout; no specific timeframe can be predicted in advance.

Fresh frozen plasma is part of ExoCare’s in-house blood bank programme, which means it can be prepared and administered without waiting for external sourcing. In urgent cases, this significantly reduces the delay between diagnosis and treatment.
