Monitored Transfusion & Follow-Up
Transfusion given with continuous vitals monitoring. Follow-up bloodwork and review planned to assess response and guide ongoing management of the underlying condition.

Packed red cells are often the preferred transfusion product for cats and smaller animals precisely because the reduced volume lowers overload risk compared to whole blood. Blood typing and cross-matching is performed before every transfusion regardless of species or size.
That depends entirely on the underlying condition and how it responds to treatment – some patients need a single transfusion to stabilise while their main condition is managed, others may need repeat support over a longer period. Frequency is discussed case by case and reviewed at each follow-up.
Packed red cells deliver a higher concentration of red blood cells in less volume, which reduces the risk of volume overload – particularly relevant for small animals and patients with cardiac or kidney compromise. Whether packed cells or whole blood is more appropriate is decided based on the individual patient’s clinical picture; see our Whole Blood Transfusion page for when that option is used instead.
Conditions where this transfusion may be indicated include IMHA, FIP-related anaemia, FeLV-associated anaemia, chronic renal disease, and neonatal isoerythrolysis – each is listed on the cards above. Transfusion is a supportive measure – it addresses the immediate red cell deficit while the underlying condition is managed separately and concurrently. The treatment plan for the primary condition is discussed at consultation alongside the transfusion decision; our Critical Care team is involved where hospitalisation is needed.
