Blood Transfusion & Blood Bank

Whole Blood Transfusion

Responds when minutes matter.

Major blood loss doesn't wait

Significant haemorrhage or severe anaemia can become critical within a short window. An in-house, screened blood supply means transfusion support is ready when it is needed  not sourced after the fact. Critical care and transfusion services work alongside each other for patients who need both.

When Whole Blood Transfusion May Be Indicated

Acute Haemorrhage Support

Used to manage sudden, significant blood loss - for example following trauma or major surgery where volume replacement is urgent.

Severe Anaemia Treatment

Whole blood support for patients whose anaemia is severe enough to compromise oxygen delivery and cannot wait. A vet determines whether transfusion is indicated.

Anticoagulant Toxicity Support

For pets exposed to rodenticide or similar agents that affect clotting. Whole blood supplies both red cells and clotting factors simultaneously.

Combined RBC & Clotting Support

When a patient needs red cell replacement and clotting factor support together, whole blood addresses both deficits in a single product. See Packed Red Blood Cells when only red cells are needed.

What Happens When You Bring Your Pet In

Call +60-3-5145 8989 before you travel - preparation time matters in a transfusion case.
1

Call Ahead

Calling before you leave gives the team time to prepare the unit and setup, so there is less delay when you arrive.

2

Assessment

PCV/TP (packed cell volume and total protein) and clinical stability are checked on arrival to confirm transfusion is clinically indicated.

3

Typing & Cross-Match

Every unit is blood-typed and cross-matched before transfusion begins. This step is not skipped, even in urgent cases.

4

Monitored Transfusion

Continuous vitals monitoring throughout transfusion. The team watches for and responds to any reaction immediately.

I am very grateful for the excellent care my parrot received at this exotic veterinary clinic. From the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The veterinarian was highly knowledgeable about birds and handled my parrot with great care and patience. They took the time to explain everything clearly and provided helpful advice on my parrot's health and ongoing care. It was reassuring to see how experienced they were with exotic pets, and I felt confident that my parrot was receiving the best possible treatment. The only problem is that they don't operates 24 hours a day, it would be much better if they were open 24 hours.

Had a great experience at Exocare Veterinary Medical Centre. The staff and veterinarians are very friendly, helpful, and genuinely care about the animals. Service was fast and efficient, and the consultation fees and treatments were reasonably priced. What impressed me the most was their excellent after-service support. They were responsive to follow-up questions and provided clear guidance on post-treatment care. The doctors are highly professional, especially when it comes to avian medicine. It's not easy to find a vet with strong knowledge and experience in bird healthcare, so it's reassuring to know my birds are in good hands. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality veterinary care for exotic pets and birds!

Whole blood transfusion is available during ExoCare clinic hours: Monday and Wednesday to Sunday, 11 AM to 7 PM. We are closed on Tuesdays. If your pet needs emergency blood support outside these hours, contact a 24-hour emergency veterinary facility immediately – do not wait until we reopen.

Blood typing and cross-matching is performed on every unit before transfusion – this step is not bypassed in urgent situations. Compatible typing reduces the risk of transfusion reaction and is a non-negotiable part of safe transfusion practice at ExoCare.

Speed depends on clinical readiness – calling ahead before you travel gives the team time to prepare the unit and set up before you arrive. Where a compatible unit is in-house, lead time is significantly shorter than sourcing externally. Emergency cases are triaged on arrival.

Pale or white gums, rapid or laboured breathing, sudden collapse, visible weakness, and significant blood loss are all reasons to call the clinic immediately. A veterinary assessment is needed to determine whether transfusion is clinically indicated – do not attempt to manage these signs at home. Call +60-3-5145 8989 now if you are concerned.

That depends on the clinical picture. Whole blood is used when both red cell volume and clotting factors are needed together. Where the deficit is isolated to red cells – for example in some cases of immune-mediated anaemia – packed red blood cells may be more appropriate. See our Packed Red Blood Cells page for when that option is used instead.
