Periodontal disease is advanced dental disease affecting the gums and tooth roots. It starts as tartar buildup on the tooth surface, progressively moving below the gumline where it causes structural damage that is not visible from the outside.
Left untreated, it causes pain, loose teeth, and can affect overall health beyond the mouth. It’s one of the most common conditions seen across all pet species and one of the most preventable.
Persistent bad breath is one of the earliest and most common signs of dental disease — not something to dismiss as normal.
Teeth that move or fall out indicate significant bone and tissue loss around the root a sign of advanced disease.
Increased salivation, sometimes blood-tinged, can indicate significant oral pain or infection below the gumline.
Red, swollen, or receding gums around the teeth are a direct sign of active gum inflammation and disease progression.
Diagnosis involves an oral health examination under appropriate sedation, sometimes with dental X-ray to assess the extent of disease below the gumline where most of the damage occurs and where surface inspection alone misses it.
See Our Oral Health Examination Service →Early-stage disease often responds well to professional scaling and polishing. More advanced cases may require extraction of teeth that are too damaged to save, we assess each tooth individually and only extract where necessary. Ongoing home dental care helps prevent recurrence.
When To Seek Care
If you notice persistent bad breath, loose teeth, drooling, or swollen gums book a dental assessment. The earlier periodontal disease is caught, the more options are available and the better the outcome.

I am very grateful for the excellent care my parrot received at this exotic veterinary clinic. From the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The veterinarian was highly knowledgeable about birds and handled my parrot with great care and patience. They took the time to explain everything clearly and provided helpful advice on my parrot's health and ongoing care. It was reassuring to see how experienced they were with exotic pets, and I felt confident that my parrot was receiving the best possible treatment. The only problem is that they don't operates 24 hours a day, it would be much better if they were open 24 hours.Posted on Google![]()

Had a great experience at Exocare Veterinary Medical Centre. The staff and veterinarians are very friendly, helpful, and genuinely care about the animals. Service was fast and efficient, and the consultation fees and treatments were reasonably priced. What impressed me the most was their excellent after-service support. They were responsive to follow-up questions and provided clear guidance on post-treatment care. The doctors are highly professional, especially when it comes to avian medicine. It's not easy to find a vet with strong knowledge and experience in bird healthcare, so it's reassuring to know my birds are in good hands. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality veterinary care for exotic pets and birds!Posted on Google![]()

Only if individual teeth are too damaged to save, we assess each one and only extract where it’s the right call. Keeping healthy teeth is always the preference.
Roughly annually for most pets more frequently if dental disease has already been identified or if your pet is prone to rapid tartar buildup. We’ll advise on the right schedule for your animal.
Early-stage disease can improve significantly with professional treatment and consistent home care. Advanced bone and tissue loss is managed rather than fully reversed.
Chronic dental infection can have effects beyond the mouth over time. Getting on top of dental disease is part of overall health management, not just dental care.
It’s one of the most reliable early warning signs persistent bad breath in pets is worth investigating rather than accepting as normal. Occasionally it can indicate other issues, which is another reason to have it checked.
