Yes – rabbits, guinea pigs, chinchillas, and other exotic species have specific dental anatomy that needs monitoring, and dental problems in exotics can progress quickly and become serious. The exam approach is adapted to the species.
Bad breath in pets is often related to oral health – tartar, gum disease, or infection – but can also have causes outside the mouth. An oral exam is the right starting point to work out what’s actually driving it.
For most pets, an annual oral health examination is a reasonable baseline – more frequently if there are known dental issues or high-risk factors. Your vet will advise on the right interval based on your pet’s individual situation at the first exam.
Usually not – most pets tolerate a thorough oral examination while awake. If a more detailed look is needed and the pet can’t cooperate, we’d discuss sedation as an option, not a default first step.
