Dental Care

Dental Scaling & Polishing

Keeps the mouth genuinely healthy, not just fresher.

Tartar buildup moves faster than owners expect

Once tartar builds above the gumline, it's already progressing below it too. Regular scaling and polishing is what actually slows periodontal disease – not just brushing at home.

What the Procedure Covers

Ultrasonic & Manual Scaling

Removes tartar above and below the gumline that brushing alone can't reach - the part that actually matters for disease prevention. See our Periodontal Disease page for what tartar left untreated leads to.

Subgingival Cleaning

Cleaning below the gumline, where periodontal disease actually starts. The part most often skipped in an awake patient, and the reason GA is necessary.

Polishing

Smooths the tooth surface after scaling, which slows new tartar accumulation. Not cosmetic - it directly affects how quickly the problem returns.

Dental Charting

A full record of your pet's teeth at each visit - tracked over time to catch changes early. This is what turns a one-off clean into a long-term dental health record. See our Oral Health Exam page if this is your pet's first assessment.

What to Expect

1

Consult

Assessment and procedure plan discussed - what the scaling involves and what we expect to find based on the current state of your pet's mouth.

2

Pre-Procedure Screening

Health checks before general anaesthesia - bloodwork and anything else indicated for your pet's age and condition. See our Anaesthesia page for how we approach GA.

3

Scaling & Polishing

Performed under general anaesthesia - ultrasonic and manual scaling, subgingival cleaning, and polishing in sequence.

4

Recovery & Charting Review

Findings and home care discussed once your pet is awake - dental charting results explained and next interval recommended.

I am very grateful for the excellent care my parrot received at this exotic veterinary clinic. From the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The veterinarian was highly knowledgeable about birds and handled my parrot with great care and patience. They took the time to explain everything clearly and provided helpful advice on my parrot's health and ongoing care. It was reassuring to see how experienced they were with exotic pets, and I felt confident that my parrot was receiving the best possible treatment. The only problem is that they don't operates 24 hours a day, it would be much better if they were open 24 hours.

Had a great experience at Exocare Veterinary Medical Centre. The staff and veterinarians are very friendly, helpful, and genuinely care about the animals. Service was fast and efficient, and the consultation fees and treatments were reasonably priced. What impressed me the most was their excellent after-service support. They were responsive to follow-up questions and provided clear guidance on post-treatment care. The doctors are highly professional, especially when it comes to avian medicine. It's not easy to find a vet with strong knowledge and experience in bird healthcare, so it's reassuring to know my birds are in good hands. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality veterinary care for exotic pets and birds!

Dental charting records the condition of every tooth – presence, health, pocket depth, and any abnormalities – at each visit. Over time it allows us to track changes and catch progression early, rather than only noticing problems when they become obvious.

Possibly, if the exam or charting finds teeth that can’t be saved through cleaning alone – but that is discussed before anything happens, not decided during the procedure without your input. See our Tooth Extraction page for what that involves if it comes up.

It depends on the individual – some pets accumulate tartar faster based on diet, genetics, and home care. Your vet will advise on the right interval based on the dental charting results at each visit.

Thorough scaling – particularly below the gumline – requires the animal to be completely still, which isn’t achievable in a conscious patient. General anaesthesia allows a proper, safe procedure that reaches where disease actually starts.

The goal is the same – removing tartar and polishing – but pets require general anaesthesia where humans typically don’t, and the anatomy varies between species. The procedure itself follows the same sequence: scaling, subgingival cleaning, then polishing.
