SUBANG JAYA, 19 August 2026 — The growing popularity of exotic pets in Malaysia, driven partly by social media, is increasing demand for specialised veterinary care and raising concerns over responsible ownership.
The issue was highlighted during an Astro AWANI session at Exocare Vet Medical Centre on 19 August, featuring veterinarian Dr. Asma Farihah.
Exocare treats species such as reptiles, birds, sugar gliders and hedgehogs, all with care needs that differ greatly from cats and dogs.
“Small does not mean simple,” Dr. Asma said, noting that exotic pets often require precise diets, habitats, temperature, humidity and specialised handling.
Poor husbandry can lead to nutritional deficiencies, stress and serious illness, she added. Many exotic animals also hide signs of weakness, meaning health problems may only surface at an advanced stage.
Dr. Asma warned against buying exotic pets based on trends, as some grow larger, turn territorial or live for decades, with purchase price only part of the long-term cost.
She advised prospective owners to understand the species, weigh the lifelong commitment and identify an experienced exotic veterinarian before bringing an animal home. Online information, she said, should support not replace professional veterinary care.
