Fast breathing while your cat is resting, or breathing with its mouth open, is a warning sign. Cats rarely pant like dogs, so please contact a vet straight away.
ExoCare is not a 24-hour hospital. Outside these hours, please contact the nearest 24-hour veterinary hospital.
What to do in an emergencyCats are good at hiding illness, and they do not usually pant. When a cat breathes fast at rest, it often means the heart or lungs are under strain.
Please do not give food, water or medicine to a cat that is struggling to breathe. Keep it calm and travel in a well-ventilated carrier.
Counting at home: a normal resting breathing rate for most cats is under 40 breaths a minute. If your cat is above this while asleep, or breathing with its mouth open, contact us straight away.
A ventilated carrierKeep it calm and do not cover it completely.
A breathing videoA short video of your cat breathing at rest helps us a lot.

I am very grateful for the excellent care my parrot received at this exotic veterinary clinic. From the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The veterinarian was highly knowledgeable about birds and handled my parrot with great care and patience. They took the time to explain everything clearly and provided helpful advice on my parrot's health and ongoing care. It was reassuring to see how experienced they were with exotic pets, and I felt confident that my parrot was receiving the best possible treatment. The only problem is that they don't operates 24 hours a day, it would be much better if they were open 24 hours.Posted on Google![]()

Had a great experience at Exocare Veterinary Medical Centre. The staff and veterinarians are very friendly, helpful, and genuinely care about the animals. Service was fast and efficient, and the consultation fees and treatments were reasonably priced. What impressed me the most was their excellent after-service support. They were responsive to follow-up questions and provided clear guidance on post-treatment care. The doctors are highly professional, especially when it comes to avian medicine. It's not easy to find a vet with strong knowledge and experience in bird healthcare, so it's reassuring to know my birds are in good hands. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality veterinary care for exotic pets and birds!Posted on Google![]()

Short panting after hard play or heat can happen, but it should stop quickly. Panting at rest, or panting that does not settle, needs a vet check straight away.
Common causes include heart disease, fluid around the lungs, asthma and infection. An examination is needed to find the actual cause.
Bring your cat in a well-ventilated carrier, a video of the breathing if possible, and any previous medical records.
Yes, stress and heat can, but it should settle once your cat is calm. If it does not, or your cat is breathing with its mouth open, please contact us.
Most cats breathe fewer than 40 times a minute while resting or asleep. If your cat’s resting rate is higher, please contact us.
Watch your cat while it is asleep, count the rises of the chest for 30 seconds, then multiply by two. A short video is also helpful for us.
