What Dental Radiography Shows
Root Assessment
Sees root structure that a visual exam alone can't show - where most dental problems actually originate. A visual check of the crown tells you very little about what's happening below it.
Tooth Resorption Staging

Tooth resorption is a process where the tooth structure progressively breaks down from within or along the root surface – common in cats but seen in other species too. It often has no visible external signs early on, which is why intraoral X-ray is the primary way to detect and stage it.
Usually yes – accurate intraoral X-rays require the sensor to be precisely positioned and the patient to be still, which isn’t reliably achievable in a conscious animal. Whether that means sedation or GA depends on the specific case and what views are needed.
Not necessarily every year – it’s recommended when a visual or oral exam suggests something might be happening below the surface, or when planning treatment like extraction or scaling. Your vet will advise when imaging adds useful information rather than scheduling it routinely.
A visual check only shows the crown surface and visible gumline – root structure, bone levels, and early resorption aren’t visible without imaging. Dental radiography fills that gap, which is why it’s often recommended alongside or after an oral exam.
