Ophthalmology

Cloudy, red, or painful-looking eyes need urgent attention, we protect your pet's vision.

What Happens When an Eye Problem Waits?

!

Eye conditions can progress from mild irritation to permanent vision loss within days, sometimes hours, if left untreated.

!

A cloudy or red eye can mean several very different things — waiting to "see if it clears up" often costs valuable treatment time.

!

Exotic species have eye anatomy that differs significantly from cats and dogs — general treatment approaches don't always translate.

It depends on the cause, but redness combined with squinting, cloudiness, or sudden onset should be seen promptly. Some eye conditions can worsen significantly within hours.

Conjunctivitis affects the surface tissue around the eye and is usually less urgent. A corneal ulcer affects the eye’s surface itself and can progress quickly a proper exam with staining is the only reliable way to tell them apart.

Cherry eye rarely resolves without treatment. Left alone, it can lead to chronic irritation or dry eye — surgical replacement is usually the recommended long-term fix.

Not necessarily. Cloudiness in rabbits can be linked to conditions like E. cuniculi-associated uveitis, which needs specific diagnosis and isn’t something to assume is harmless.

Only when the eye is beyond saving, end-stage glaucoma, severe trauma, or a tumor, for example. It’s always a last resort after other options have been assessed, and the priority afterward is your pet’s comfort.
