What Is Metabolic Bone Disease?
Metabolic bone disease weakens a reptile’s bones when it doesn’t get enough UVB light or calcium to maintain normal bone structure. It’s one of the most common nutritional conditions seen in captive reptiles.
Inadequate UVB lighting and insufficient calcium in the diet are the main drivers, both are correctable once identified. Caught early, MBD is very manageable; left uncorrected, it can progress to serious deformity or weakness.
Symptoms To Watch For
Weakness
Generalised muscle weakness, difficulty gripping, or inability to hold the body up normally.
Deformities
Softening or bowing of limbs, jaw, or spine — visible signs that bone structure is compromised.
Paralysis
In advanced or untreated cases, severe bone and nerve involvement can lead to partial or full loss of limb function.
Poor Appetite
Reduced interest in food, which can worsen nutritional deficiency and accelerate progression.
How It's Diagnosed
Diagnosis involves a physical exam and digital X-ray to assess bone density and any structural changes, alongside a full review of your reptile’s husbandry, UVB setup, and diet.
