What Is Reptile Dysecdysis?
Dysecdysis is when a reptile struggles to shed its skin properly, leaving retained patches especially around the toes, tail tip, and eyes. It’s one of the most common reptile skin problems seen in clinic.
Incorrect humidity is the most common cause, though inadequate substrate or a lack of rough surfaces for rubbing can also play a role. In most cases, correcting the enclosure setup prevents recurrence.

Retained Shed
Patches of old skin that haven't come away cleanly — often visible as dull, tight areas over the body, toes, or tail.
Stuck Skin
Skin that remains attached around the eyes, toes, or tail tip, where restricted blood flow is a risk if left unaddressed.
Difficulty Shedding
Incomplete or fragmented sheds where skin comes away in pieces rather than in one clean shed cycle.

Diagnosis is usually straightforward on physical examination, combined with a review of your reptile’s enclosure setup, humidity levels, substrate, and temperature gradient. Getting the husbandry picture right is as important as treating the shed itself.
