Eye Disease

Glaucoma

Can cause blindness within days if missed.

What Is Glaucoma?

Glaucoma is a rise in pressure inside the eye that can damage the optic nerve and vision quickly if left untreated. It affects dogs and cats, and is a genuine emergency in veterinary ophthalmology, hours matter, not days.

Symptoms To Watch For

Eye Redness

Visible redness or bloodshot appearance in the white of the eye, caused by increased internal pressure.

Discharge

Watery or mucoid discharge from the affected eye, sometimes accompanied by squinting or sensitivity to light.

Cloudiness

A bluish or hazy appearance to the cornea, a sign that pressure has been elevated for some time.

Pain

Pawing at the eye, reluctance to be touched around the face, or general withdrawn behaviour may indicate eye pain.

How It's Diagnosed

Diagnosis involves measuring eye pressure (tonometry) alongside a full ophthalmic examination. Prompt assessment is essential early diagnosis before significant vision loss gives the best chance of preserving sight.

See Our Glaucoma Management Service →

Treatment & Management

Treatment focuses on lowering eye pressure as quickly as possible to protect remaining vision. Medication manages many cases; surgical intervention is considered when needed. The goal is preserving as much sight as possible for as long as possible.

When To Seek Care

If your pet’s eye looks red, cloudy, or painful come in the same day. Glaucoma can progress to permanent vision loss within days, and the window for preserving sight is narrow.

I am very grateful for the excellent care my parrot received at this exotic veterinary clinic. From the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The veterinarian was highly knowledgeable about birds and handled my parrot with great care and patience. They took the time to explain everything clearly and provided helpful advice on my parrot's health and ongoing care. It was reassuring to see how experienced they were with exotic pets, and I felt confident that my parrot was receiving the best possible treatment. The only problem is that they don't operates 24 hours a day, it would be much better if they were open 24 hours.

Had a great experience at Exocare Veterinary Medical Centre. The staff and veterinarians are very friendly, helpful, and genuinely care about the animals. Service was fast and efficient, and the consultation fees and treatments were reasonably priced. What impressed me the most was their excellent after-service support. They were responsive to follow-up questions and provided clear guidance on post-treatment care. The doctors are highly professional, especially when it comes to avian medicine. It's not easy to find a vet with strong knowledge and experience in bird healthcare, so it's reassuring to know my birds are in good hands. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality veterinary care for exotic pets and birds!

Glaucoma is managed rather than cured, the goal is protecting remaining vision and keeping pressure controlled long-term. Many patients do well with the right management plan.

Redness, cloudiness, squinting, or your pet pawing at its eye are common early signs. Any of these warrants prompt attention rather than monitoring at home.

Not always, medication successfully manages many cases. Surgical options are considered when medication is insufficient to control pressure adequately.

Vision loss can occur within days in acute cases, which is why same-day assessment is the right response, not a wait-and-see approach. Early treatment gives the best chance of preserving sight.

Yes, glaucoma can affect one eye initially. The other eye is monitored carefully, as the risk of developing the condition increases once one eye is affected.
