A corneal ulcer is a wound on the surface of the eye, most commonly from trauma, scratches, or a foreign body making contact with the cornea. Without prompt treatment, it can worsen quickly and risk permanent damage to vision.
Some ulcers develop without an obvious injury. Either way, the eye’s response to the damage, pain, discharge, and progressive tissue breakdown, makes early assessment essential.
Watery or mucoid discharge from the affected eye, sometimes increasing as the ulcer progresses.
Holding the eye partially or fully shut a direct response to pain and light sensitivity from the damaged cornea.
Visible inflammation around the eye, particularly in the white of the eye, as the body responds to the injury.
Pawing at the face, reluctance to be touched around the eye, or general withdrawal suggesting eye discomfort.
Diagnosis uses a fluorescein stain test a safe dye that highlights the ulcerated area under examination light, showing its size and depth. A full eye exam determines the severity and appropriate treatment path.
See Our Corneal Ulcer Treatment Service →Treatment depends on severity. Many corneal ulcers respond well to prompt medical management with appropriate eye drops and an Elizabethan collar to prevent self-trauma. Deeper or more complex ulcers may need more involved care. Do not attempt to treat at home.
See Corneal Ulcer Treatment Service →When To Seek Care
If your pet is squinting, has a watery or red eye, or is pawing at its face, book an urgent same-day assessment. Corneal ulcers can worsen within hours and delay increases the risk of permanent damage.

I am very grateful for the excellent care my parrot received at this exotic veterinary clinic. From the moment we arrived, the staff were friendly, welcoming, and attentive. The veterinarian was highly knowledgeable about birds and handled my parrot with great care and patience. They took the time to explain everything clearly and provided helpful advice on my parrot's health and ongoing care. It was reassuring to see how experienced they were with exotic pets, and I felt confident that my parrot was receiving the best possible treatment. The only problem is that they don't operates 24 hours a day, it would be much better if they were open 24 hours.Posted on Google![]()

Had a great experience at Exocare Veterinary Medical Centre. The staff and veterinarians are very friendly, helpful, and genuinely care about the animals. Service was fast and efficient, and the consultation fees and treatments were reasonably priced. What impressed me the most was their excellent after-service support. They were responsive to follow-up questions and provided clear guidance on post-treatment care. The doctors are highly professional, especially when it comes to avian medicine. It's not easy to find a vet with strong knowledge and experience in bird healthcare, so it's reassuring to know my birds are in good hands. Highly recommended for anyone looking for quality veterinary care for exotic pets and birds!Posted on Google![]()
