What Is Rabbit GI Stasis?
GI stasis is when a rabbit’s digestive system slows or stops entirely. It is a true emergency — rabbits can deteriorate rapidly, sometimes within hours of symptoms appearing. This is not a condition to monitor at home.
Common triggers include an inadequate diet, stress, dehydration, or pain from an unrelated issue that disrupts normal gut motility. Identifying and addressing the underlying cause is part of treatment.
Symptoms To Watch For
Reduced Appetite
A rabbit that has stopped eating — even partially — for more than a few hours is a warning sign that needs same-day attention.
Lethargy
Unusual stillness, unresponsiveness, or reluctance to move are signs the rabbit is in distress.
No Faecal Pellets
Absence of droppings, or very small/misshapen ones, indicates the gut has slowed significantly.
Hunched Posture
A rabbit sitting hunched and still — especially with teeth grinding — is showing signs of pain and discomfort.
