Stomatitis is a mouth infection in reptiles – sometimes called mouth rot – that can range from mild inflammation to severe infection affecting the jawbone if left untreated. It needs treatment and doesn’t resolve on its own.
When done at the right stage – before severe overgrowth – trimming is generally well-tolerated, and whether sedation is used depends on the individual animal. Catching overgrowth early makes the procedure simpler and less stressful for the animal.
Signs can include difficulty eating, food dropping from the mouth, drooling, or weight loss – but the earliest stages often aren’t visible without an oral exam. If something seems off with how your pet is eating, a check is the right response rather than waiting for obvious symptoms.
It varies significantly between individual animals – some rabbits and rodents need more frequent attention than others based on genetics, diet, and tooth growth rate. Your vet will advise on the right interval at the first visit rather than applying a one-size schedule.
